Mental Conditioning – No Heavy Lifting?
Of course it is important to get physically healthy by exercising and eating right. And, it does take effort.
However, let’s not underestimate the power of a sharp, focused and strong mind to help you achieve your wellness goals.
You know the benefits of muscle conditioning: you make demands upon your body and it responds by becoming stronger. In similar ways, you can choose to strengthen your mind, thereby enabling you to become more determined to remain steady with your self-improvement aspirations without wavering.
Commitment With Emotion
When you compose a written statement outlining the changes you are committed to showing up in your life and say them (backed by intense emotion) over and over again, physiological changes take place in the brain. This fusion of strong emotion and a real decision to shift your behavior creates new neural pathways in your nervous system – your behavior must change as a result.
Let’s not underestimate the power of a sharp, focused and strong mind to help you achieve your wellness goals.
So, for example, if you wanted to lose 30 pounds of fat and you affirmed this every day, saw yourself in your imagination as healthier and happier doing the things you would love to do as a slimmer person, more neural pathways would get hardwired into your brain coupled with the associated positive behavior you desired.
Your mental resolve will have translated into eating better, exercising and staying true to your program. You begin to think differently, feel differently and act differently. Instead of a chocolate bar, you now choose a healthier alternative. New thinking = better emotional state = new habits = new neural pathways = results.
Can You Spare 10 Minutes a Day?
Try putting aside just 10 minutes each day for the next few weeks and think of a negative behavior you would like to change. Perhaps it’s a habit you have had for many years that absolutely must change. Find a quiet place where you won’t be distracted, switch off your phones and TV, and just sit quietly, imagining that desire as if it were already happening in present time. ‘See’ yourself succeeding. Try not to let your mind wander. It’s difficult to stay focused at first, but with practice you will get better.
Now, stand up and move your body, loudly stating your positive intention in present time. Say it with emotion. Dance, thrust your fist into the air – any movement that demonstrates passion will do. You are waking up your brain to pay attention and listen!
You are waking up your brain to pay attention and listen.
If you do this every day, you will begin to find it easier to ‘shift’ your behavior within a week or two. In a month, you will be surprised at what you have accomplished as the new patterns of behavior become more strongly wired as new neural pathways in your brain!
Where are you right now in terms of your thinking, focus and commitment to your health goals? (Do you have goals? If not, first establish what they are).
Incredibly, with the dual elements of present time visualization and stating positive emotional affirmations while moving your body, you will ‘get the job done’ instead of procrastinating or worse, giving up. Previous obstacles that have prevented you from becoming healthier, seem to fade away.
